Why Cambodia
At least 60 countries and regions today face hidden dangers left over from wartime. It is estimated that more than 100 million landmines are still buried, 10% of which are in Cambodia, making it one of the most mine-ridden countries.
Most of the mines/ERW were laid during the Cambodia-Vietnam war in 1978 as well as the following civil war, which lasted for about 12 years. Since 1993, with the international community’s help, including China, nearly 6 million mines and unexploded ordnance has been cleared in Cambodia. But there are still 1,700 square kilometers suspected of mine and shell remnants across the country. Our Cambodia Mine Action Background Report gives more details with the latest data on the mine situation in Cambodia. It poses potential threats to millions of Cambodians lives every moment and leaves the land wasted. Despite the urgency of demining, the danger and cost behind this work delay the progress. According to the latest statistical report released by the Cambodian Demining Agency, more than 10 million unexploded anti-personnel mines and bombs of all kinds remain on Cambodian soil to date, representing 10 percent of the world in terms of numbers alone. In the war years, it only took $7 to plant a mine with a statute of limitations of decades or even centuries. Today, however, it costs $3,000 to $5,000 to dismantle such a mine, and sometimes, the lives of innocent civilians and even deminers. There were at least 79 mine/ERW casualties, including two deminers in 2019 in Cambodia, reported by Landmine Monitor 2020. To accelerate the complete clearance of mine globally, In recent years, China has provided experts, training and equipment to assist the mine-clearing in Cambodia.

Stage 1
Our first stage of mine clearance was launched on 19th May. We handed over of 6.4 hectares of released land in Dabang Temo Village in Banteay Srei District, Siem Reap Province, Cambodia

We annually attended the NDM-UN24 meeting hosted by the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) in Geneva and shared the mine action experiences in Cambodia from the perspective of a Chinese NGO. We are the only Chinese NGO displayed on the official platform of the meeting so far.
