Peaceland Foundation Partners with Kilimanjaro National Park for Volunteer Training

Date: 2 June, 2023

Peaceland Foundation collaborated with Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro National Park to deliver a four-day capacity-building program for militia volunteers from neighboring communities.  These volunteers play a crucial role in the park's daily operations, including assisting during emergencies like wildfires.

In November last year, Peaceland Foundation conducted initial training for these volunteers, covering park regulations, human-wildlife conflict management, and wildlife deterrence techniques. Building on their potential and identified needs, the second phase of training took place from May 28 to June 1, focusing on livelihood development. Volunteers were introduced to the concept of conservation community banks and learned how to initiate eco-friendly livelihood projects aimed at achieving self-sufficiency.

During the training, volunteers gained insights on how to invest small capital in sustainable livelihood activities and received seed funding to purchase essential supplies. Peaceland Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to continued collaboration with the national park, with plans to offer future programs focused on disaster relief, livelihood development, and environmental protection to strengthen local community governance.

The training was positively received by local government and communities, equipping militia volunteers with valuable skills and enhancing their collaboration with the park. This joint effort supports the sustainable development of the community.
