On April 30, 2023, supported by Pundarika Charity, Peaceland Foundation launched its food distribution project for impoverished elderly residents in the Poli region of Tanzania. This initiative will provide monthly food packages for a year to 50 low-income households, containing essential staples like rice, maize flour, oil, salt, and sugar.
The Poli region is a remote township with approximately 20,000 residents. Due to its isolated location and lack of infrastructure, the area faces extreme poverty. Many able-bodied adults migrate for work, leaving behind elderly individuals and children who struggle to fend for themselves. The infertile land and harsh living conditions force some elderly and children to rely on begging and charity for survival.
The project team navigated slippery roads and harsh conditions during the rainy season to personally deliver food packages to the elderly. During distribution, the team engaged deeply with local seniors, gaining insights into their hardships and the broader challenges faced by the elderly in the area.
In addition to providing food aid, the team also discussed broader livelihood issues with the local chief, including clean water, healthcare, education, and employment. While the project currently supports only 50 households, the team hopes this is just the beginning and anticipates bringing more substantial improvements to the community in the future.
